About artist:

Born in 1941 in Częstochowa. In 1968 he graduated from the Department of Graphic Arts in Katowice (an affiliate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow. Between 1976-1982 he worked as a lecturer at the same Academy. Professor of the Silesian University in Katowice and the European Academy of Arts in Warsaw.
Duda Gracz had participated in a range of exhibitions in Poland and abroad, among them the 1984 Venice Biennial, the 1986 and 1987 Cologne art fairs, and the Polish pavilion at the 1992 EXPO in Seville. The artist has started nearly two hundred individual shows in Poland, Berlin, New York, Paris, Baden, Florence, Bratislava, New Delhi etc. The Upper Silesian Museum has a permanent display of his output. Pieces by the artist are in the collections of the Polish National Museums in Warsaw, Cracow, Poznań, Wrocław, Gdańsk, as well abroad, for example the Uffizi collection in Florence, the City Museum in Ghent and the Pushkin Museum in Moscow, not to mention numerous private collections. He boasts a number of significant awards such as the C.K. Norwid Art Critics' Award, the Award of the Council of Ministers, and the Award of the Minister of Culture and Arts. These days Duda Gracz's main line of work was painting, but his earlier media also included wood engravings, book illustrations, satirical drawings and set designs. His highly expressive canvases represent the figurative approach and are often reminiscent of the Polish painting of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. He was a talented portrait artist, but most of all a sharp-witted observer of everyday life, in terms of both customs and interpersonal relations. Psychologically enhanced, these motives are a frequent subject of his opus. He was also a keen painter of country landscapes enlivened with a human element. Died in 2004.
